    The basics

    Image compression, explained.

    • What is image compression?

Compression stores the same picture in fewer bytes by encoding the image data more efficiently or by dropping detail people rarely notice.

    • Lossy vs. lossless

Lossy compression (JPG, WebP here) removes some detail for much smaller files. Lossless compression (PNG) keeps every pixel, so savings are smaller.

    • Quality and file size

Lower quality means smaller files but more visible artifacts. Small changes near 80% often save a lot; very low values look blocky.

    • Compression vs. resizing

Compression keeps the width and height and changes encoding. Resizing changes the number of pixels. For big savings, you can do both.

    • Why some images don't shrink

Images that were already compressed, or simple PNGs, may not get smaller. Image Fixer then keeps the original and reports 0% saved.

    • How browser compression works

Your browser decodes the image and re-encodes it with its built-in JPG, PNG or WebP encoder. Results can vary slightly between browsers.

    Good to know

    Getting the balance right.

    • Faster websites

Smaller images load faster, which helps visitors on mobile connections and keeps pages responsive.

    • Ecommerce listings

Stores often show many product photos per page. Lighter files keep collections and product pages quick.

    • Balance quality and size

Start at 80%, check the preview, and lower the quality only while the image still looks right to you.

    Questions

    Compress image questions

Can I compress images without resizing them?

Yes. Width and height stay exactly the same. Only the way the image data is encoded changes.

    Does compression reduce image quality?

For JPG and WebP, lower quality settings remove some detail to save space; at around 80% the difference is usually hard to see. PNG is processed losslessly, so its quality does not change.

Can I compress multiple images at once?

Yes. Upload up to 50 images and press Apply All. Each image is compressed from its original file, and the batch downloads as a ZIP.

    Can I compress PNG images?

Yes, but PNG is re-encoded losslessly in your browser, so savings are often small or zero. If the result is not smaller, the original file is kept.

What is a good JPEG quality setting?

70–85% is a common balance between file size and visual quality. Check the preview and the real savings shown in the tool before downloading.

Why did my image not become smaller?

Some images are already well compressed. When the new file is not smaller, Image Fixer keeps the original and shows 0% saved instead of giving you a bigger file.

    Are images processed locally?

Yes. Compression happens in your browser on your own device. Your images are not uploaded to an Image Fixer server for processing.

    Is the tool free?

Yes. It is free to use and does not require an account or sign-up.

Compression happens directly in your browser. Your images are not uploaded to an Image Fixer server.

Need to prepare the photo before compressing it?

First set the image dimensions with the image resizer. If your source photos have different shapes, the square image tool can add space around a photo instead of cutting off the product.
