Why does iPhone save photos as HEIC?

Apple devices can capture photos using HEIF, often stored with the .HEIC file extension. Apple introduced HEIF support with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra because HEIF can provide better compression than JPEG, helping photos use less storage while maintaining high visual quality.

On supported iPhones, the Camera setting High Efficiency uses HEIF for photos. Users who choose Most Compatible can instead capture new photos as JPEG.

HEIF is the image format. HEIC is a commonly used file extension for HEIF images created by Apple devices. Source: Apple Support.

HEIC, JPG, PNG and WebP explained

  • What is HEIC?

HEIC is a common file extension used for images stored in the HEIF format. It is widely associated with photos captured by iPhones and other Apple devices using High Efficiency mode.

HEIF is designed for efficient storage and can preserve high image quality while using less space than older formats such as JPEG.

  • What is JPG?

JPG, also called JPEG, is one of the most widely supported image formats. It works especially well for photographs and uses lossy compression to reduce file size.

Choose JPG when compatibility is the main priority, such as for websites, marketplaces, email, older software or upload forms.

  • What is PNG?

PNG is a lossless image format with support for transparency.

It is useful for screenshots, graphics, interface elements and images where preserving sharp details or transparent areas matters more than keeping the smallest possible file size.

  • What is WebP?

WebP is a modern image format designed for the web.

It supports both lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency, and it often produces smaller files than JPG or PNG while maintaining good visual quality.

Three output formats

Convert HEIC to the format you actually need

  • HEIC to JPG

Convert HEIC iPhone photos to JPG when you need the widest possible compatibility. JPG is a practical choice for:

    • ecommerce marketplaces
    • website upload forms
    • email
    • social media workflows
    • older software
    • devices that do not open HEIC easily
  • HEIC to PNG

Choose PNG when you want a widely supported lossless format or need transparency in workflows that support it. Converting to PNG does not improve the original image quality. PNG is especially useful for:

    • graphics
    • screenshots
    • product assets
    • design workflows
    • images that need sharp details
  • HEIC to WebP

Choose WebP when the image is primarily intended for websites or modern web applications. WebP can offer efficient compression and supports transparency, making it useful for:

    • websites
    • ecommerce stores
    • product pages
    • landing pages
    • web applications

How to convert an iPhone HEIC photo

If an iPhone is using the High Efficiency camera format, photos may be stored using HEIF and commonly use the .HEIC extension. You do not need to permanently change your iPhone camera settings just to use an existing photo elsewhere.

Upload the HEIC photo to Image Fixer, choose JPG, PNG or WebP, convert it, and use the new copy while keeping the original HEIC file unchanged.

Want future iPhone photos as JPEG?

Apple allows compatible iPhones to use Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This changes future photos to JPEG instead of HEIF. Image Fixer does not change your iPhone settings.

Choosing a format

JPG, PNG or WebP — which one should I choose?

  • Choose JPG if:

    • you want maximum compatibility
    • you are uploading photographs
    • a website rejects HEIC
    • you are sending images to another person
    • you are uploading to a marketplace
    • transparency is not required
  • Choose PNG if:

    • you need transparency
    • you need lossless output
    • the image contains graphics or text
    • file size is less important
  • Choose WebP if:

    • the image is for a website
    • you want modern web compression
    • you need transparency
    • your target platform supports WebP

Good to know

What happens when HEIC is converted?

  • Conversion does not improve quality

Converting a photo to another format cannot create detail that was not present in the original image.

  • File size can change

JPG, PNG and WebP use different compression methods, so the converted file may be smaller or larger than the HEIC source.

  • Dimensions stay the same

Image Fixer keeps the source width and height unchanged. No cropping, stretching or resizing.

Questions

HEIC converter questions

What is a HEIC file?

A HEIC file is commonly an image stored using the HEIF format. It is frequently created by iPhones and other Apple devices when the camera uses High Efficiency mode.

Why does my iPhone take HEIC photos?

Apple uses HEIF because it can provide efficient compression while maintaining high visual quality, helping photos use less storage than older formats such as JPEG.

Is HEIC the same as HEIF?

HEIF is the image file format standard. HEIC is a commonly used file extension for HEIF images, especially those created by Apple devices.

Can I convert HEIC to JPG?

Yes. Upload the HEIC image, choose JPG and convert it.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG?

Yes. Choose PNG as the output format before converting.

Can I convert HEIC to WebP?

Yes. Choose WebP when you want a modern format suitable for many websites and web applications.

Which is better: JPG, PNG or WebP?

It depends on the use case. JPG is excellent for photographs and compatibility, PNG is useful for lossless graphics and transparency, and WebP is designed for efficient use on the modern web.

Does converting HEIC reduce quality?

Conversion involves re-encoding. It cannot improve the original image quality. JPG and WebP are saved at a high quality setting (92%) to minimise visible loss; PNG is lossless.

Will Image Fixer resize my HEIC photo?

No. This converter keeps the original width and height.

Can I convert multiple iPhone photos at once?

Yes. You can convert up to 50 HEIC files in one batch and download the results together as a ZIP.

Are HEIC images uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion happens directly in your browser and the source files are not uploaded to an Image Fixer server.

Why won't some websites accept HEIC?

Not every website, application or image-processing system supports HEIC/HEIF uploads. JPG and PNG have broader historical compatibility, while WebP is widely supported by modern browsers.

Can I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?

Yes. On compatible iPhones, go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Future photos are then captured as JPEG instead of HEIF.

Does converting HEIC delete my original photo?

No. The converter creates a new output file and does not modify or delete the original HEIC image on your device.

Your photos stay on your device.

HEIC conversion happens directly in your browser. Your source photos are not uploaded to an Image Fixer server for processing.

Converting product photos for your store?

After converting a HEIC photo, check its dimensions and framing before uploading it. Use the image resizer for exact dimensions or the square image tool when you need a square canvas without stretching the photo.
